AmaWaterways vs Avalon vs Viking: Which River Cruise Line Is Best?

One of the questions I get asked most often as a travel advisor is: What is the difference between AmaWaterways, Avalon, and Viking?

And honestly, it is a great question.

Because while all three cruise lines sail Europe’s iconic rivers, they do not all feel the same.

Choosing the right river cruise line is not just about where the ship goes. It is about how active you want to be, how much you care about your cabin, what kind of excursions you want included, and what kind of atmosphere feels right to you.

I love river cruising because it makes Europe feel easier.

You unpack once, you wake up somewhere new every morning, and you avoid a lot of the logistical stress that comes with constantly changing hotels.

But the right ship matters.

So let’s break down AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, and Viking River Cruises.

AmaWaterways: Best for active, food-loving travelers

AmaWaterway’s AmaVida ship docked in Pinhao, Portugal along the Douro River in June 2026.

AmaWaterways is often my first thought when a client tells me they want a river cruise that still feels active, interesting, and full of choice.

If river cruise lines were people, AmaWaterways would be the friend who says, Do you want to hike to the castle before wine tasting?

The vibe is polished but not stuffy, comfortable but not sleepy, and elegant but still fun.

AmaWaterways is best for:

  • Active travelers

  • Food and wine lovers

  • Couples and friend groups

  • Travelers who want included excursion options

  • People who want river cruising to feel immersive, not passive

What AmaWaterways does well:

AmaWaterways is known for offering a strong mix of included excursion choices, active options, wellness programming, and excellent food.

Depending on the itinerary and ship, you may find walking tours, bike rides, hikes, wine tastings, fitness classes, and more. For my clients who like having options, this is a big deal.

Not everyone wants the same pace every day.

Some days you want the active hike, on a rainy day you might opt for the tour from the coach, and some days you just want to drink the wine…Okay, maybe most days you want the wine.

The onboard feel:

AmaWaterways feels welcoming, warm, and social without being overwhelming.

The ships are beautiful, the service is strong, and the overall experience tends to feel a little more energetic than some of the more traditional river cruise lines.

Many AmaWaterways ships also offer cabin categories with twin balconies, meaning you may have both a French balcony and an outside balcony, and that gives you more ways to enjoy the scenery from your room, which is honestly one of the best parts of river cruising.

My honest take on AmaWaterways

I find myself recommending AmaWaterways most often because so many of my clients want ease, good food, thoughtful service, and experiences that still feel active and personal.

If you like the idea of river cruising but are worried it may feel too slow or too traditional, AmaWaterways is usually where I start.

Avalon Waterways: Best for travelers who care about the cabin and the view

The Avalon Waterways Avalon Envision docked in Cologne, Germany along a Rhine River sailing in March 2026.

Avalon Waterways has a quieter kind of confidence. It is relaxed, scenic, and very focused on the experience of watching the world unfold around you.

The thing Avalon is especially known for is its Panorama Suites.

These cabins are designed so the bed faces the window, which sounds simple until you realize what that means. You can literally wake up and watch castles, vineyards, and riverside towns drift by from bed.

I know that sounds dramatic. It is also very, very lovely. (And pictured below!)

Avalon is best for:

  • Travelers who care deeply about their cabin

  • Couples who want a relaxed, scenic experience

  • People who want beautiful views without needing constant activity

  • Travelers who like a quieter onboard atmosphere

  • Guests who want comfort without a flashy luxury feel

What Avalon does well:

Avalon’s cabin design is genuinely one of its biggest strengths.

Their Panorama Suites are spacious by river cruise standards and designed to bring the outside in, with wide-opening windows and beds facing the view. This makes Avalon especially appealing if the ship itself is part of the experience for you.

Some travelers see their cabin as just a place to sleep, while others want it to feel like a retreat.

Avalon is for the second group.

The onboard feel:

Avalon tends to feel calm, comfortable, and understated. It is not trying too hard, it is not flashy or loud.

It is a good fit for travelers who want the rhythm of a river cruise, but also want room to breathe.

My honest take on Avalon:

I like Avalon for travelers who say things like, I want this to feel relaxing, or I care more about comfort and scenery than being busy every second.

If you are the kind of person who could happily sip coffee in your cabin while Europe floats by outside your window, Avalon deserves a serious look.

Viking River Cruises: Best for travelers who want a familiar, classic river cruise experience

Viking is probably the river cruise line most people have heard of first.

And there is a reason for that. Viking has built an enormous marketing presence in river cruising. Their ships are recognizable, their itineraries are classic, and their branding is incredibly consistent.

If you have ever watched PBS and suddenly felt the urge to sail through Europe, Viking may be why.

Viking is best for:

  • First-time river cruisers who want a familiar brand

  • Travelers who like consistency

  • Guests who prefer classic European itineraries

  • People who want a straightforward river cruise experience

  • Travelers who are drawn to a calm, quiet, adult-focused onboard environment

What Viking does well

Viking does consistency very well. Their ships have a recognizable design, their itineraries cover many of Europe’s most popular rivers, and their experience is easy to understand.

For travelers who feel nervous about trying river cruising for the first time, that familiarity can feel reassuring.

Things to consider with Viking:

Viking can be a great fit for the right traveler, but I do not consider it the best fit for everyone.

Compared with some other lines, Viking’s experience can feel more “traditional”. Excursion variety, activity level, cabin style, and inclusions may not match what every traveler is looking for.

That does not make Viking bad, it just means it should be chosen intentionally, not automatically.

My honest take on Viking:

Viking is a strong option for travelers who like a classic, predictable experience and feel reassured by a brand they already recognize.

I just always want clients to understand that most famous does not always mean best for you.

Quick comparison: AmaWaterways vs Avalon vs Viking

River Cruise Line Best For Overall Vibe Big Strength
AmaWaterways Active travelers, foodies, couples, friend groups Warm, energetic, polished Excursion variety, food, wellness, active options
Avalon Waterways Scenic cruisers, couples, cabin-focused travelers Relaxed, scenic, understated Panorama Suites and cabin design
Viking River Cruises First-time river cruisers, brand-loyal travelers, classic itinerary seekers Classic, consistent, familiar Brand recognition and broad itinerary availability

So which river cruise line is best?

There is no universal winner. There is only the river cruise line that is best for the way you like to travel.

I would usually recommend AmaWaterways if you want more included choices, active excursions, excellent food, and a social but not overwhelming atmosphere.

I would usually recommend Avalon Waterways if you care deeply about your cabin, love scenic cruising, and want a quieter, more relaxed experience.

And if you want the larger marketed item, and don’t care as much about personal touches or inclusions, Viking is a great product on the rivers!

My personal recommendation

If you have followed me for a while, you know I have a soft spot for river cruising.

I love unpacking once. I love waking up somewhere new. I love that you can spend the morning wandering a medieval town and be back onboard with a glass of wine before dinner.

River cruising makes Europe feel easier, especially for travelers who want depth without the stress of constantly changing hotels.

But the ship matters.

The best river cruise is not necessarily the fanciest one or the one with the biggest advertising budget.

It is the one that matches your pace, personality, and priorities. And that is where working with a travel advisor can make all the difference.

Thinking about a European river cruise?

If you are trying to decide between AmaWaterways, Avalon, Viking, or another river cruise line entirely, I would love to help you sort through the options.

The goal is not just to get you on a ship. The goal is to choose the right experience for you.
